The summit is led by Harvard faculty members Leonard J. Marcus, Ph.D, a pioneer in the conceptual and pragmatic elements of meta-leadership, and Barry C. Dorn, M.D., an expert on negotiation and conflict resolution. Their research and training on meta-leadership have played a key role in shaping strategic thinking on national and international terrorism preparedness and emergency response.

This dynamic team has presented in forums around the world, including engagements at the White House. They are lead faculty on the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative, a Harvard leadership program for senior officials in federal, state and local government responsible for preparedness, response or recovery from terrorist events and natural disasters.

Drs. Marcus and Dorn are joined by guest presenters, who have completed the Harvard NPLI training and hold key leadership positions in government, business or nonprofit organizations.

Program Partners

The Meta-Leadership Summit for Preparedness is an initiative of the CDC Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Preparedness Leadership Initiative (NPLI)* - Harvard School of Public Health, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The CDC Foundation directs the program through a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. NPLI* – Harvard School of Public Health faculty members develop and present the summit curriculum. Experts from CDC’s Coordinating Office for Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response coordinate program evaluation and provide technical assistance on curriculum design and content. CDC staff members also coordinate outcomes management at the summit sites. Deloitte Consulting is engaged as a special partner, assisting with program evaluation.

*NPLI is a joint program between the Harvard School of Public Health and the Kennedy School of Government.
